Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the eighteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a sequel to Captain America: Civil War. The film follows T'Challa who, after being informed that his father has died from old age, returns to his homeland of Wakanda to assume the throne following a terrorist attack on its royal palace. In February 2006, Marvel Studios announced plans to release a Black Panther film. In September 2008, the project was announced and introduced as part of a cinematic universe, with Chadwick Boseman in the title role. Black Panther is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to feature a black superhero in the title role, with Boseman stating that an African-American director would help bring cultural authenticity to the film. The following year, during San Diego Comic-Con 2009, Marvel Studios announced that Creed director Ryan Coogler would direct the film. Coogler signed on to both co-write and direct in November 2015. Black Panther was the first film to be produced by Marvel Studios that is not based on a pre-existing property, although the character has appeared in various media over the years. By February 2016, Coogler had joined the cast, followed shortly after by Boseman. Filming began in January 2017 at EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and concluded in April of that year. Black Panther was set to be released in the United States on February 16, 2018, but was moved up to February 9 to begin its international rollout one week earlier. The film received praise from critics for its acting (particularly for Boseman and Wright), direction, visual effects, production values and faithfulness to the source material. It was also praised by critics for its depiction of female characters. The film also broke several box office records and became the third-highest grossing superhero film domestically, as well as the highest-grossing film of 2018. It received praise for its direction, costume design, musical score, action sequences and Boseman's performance. After T'Challa returns home following the events of "Captain America: Civil War", Zuri—a member of the diplomatic tribe known as the Okavango—reveals him that he must become king or no male relative will inherit his throne. T'Challa rejects the idea, as he wants to remain in Wakanda as a way to protect those who cannot protect themselves from threats such as the United States government and Doom, a terrorist who had been holding his father hostage. Later, T'Challa talks with W'Kabi about Zuri's message and about how he feels that he is not ready to be king. T'Challa then visits his father's former lover Monica Richards at a bar where she is the bartender. They talk about Shuri and her future with T'Challa.
